Daniel lay beside her on the old quilt spread across the cabin porch, his head resting near her hip, listening to the forest breathe around them. He reached up and traced the line of her wrist, slowly, the way the hero in the book had touched the woman he adored beneath the pines. Clara laughed softly and set the novel aside. The scent of wet cedar and earth drifted over them, and somewhere below the ridge a stream murmured over smooth stones. She leaned down, her hair falling around his face like a curtain, and kissed him with the unhurried confidence of a woman who knew exactly what she wanted.

Their clothes came away piece by piece, folded carelessly onto the wooden boards as the last light faded behind the mountains. Daniel pulled the quilt around her shoulders, and they moved together with the patience of two adults who had spent weeks building anticipation through every shared page. The wind stirred the branches overhead, and the whole valley seemed to hold its breath with them.

Later, wrapped in warmth and the quiet hum of crickets, Clara rested her cheek against his chest. Daniel reached for the stack of novels by the door and smiled at her.
