Claire had been married to Mark for nineteen years when she finally said the words out loud over a glass of red wine. She wanted to be watched. Mark did not flinch. The club was quieter than Claire expected, all low amber light and soft music. Mark kept his hand on the small of her back as they moved through the lounge, the proud stag with his doe beside him. That was when she noticed the man at the bar. He was tall, silver at the temples, with sharp gray eyes that tracked her across the room like a wolf watching the edge of a forest. His name was Elias, and when he introduced himself he asked Mark first, then Claire, whether they wanted company. Both of them said yes.

In the private suite, Mark settled into a leather armchair, loosening his tie, his eyes bright with anticipation. Elias took his time. He traced the line of Claire's collarbone with one finger, waiting for her nod before every step, and she gave it again and again. She glanced over at her husband and found him leaning forward, captivated, and the look on his face made her feel more beautiful than she had in years. Every kiss Elias pressed to her skin felt like a gift Mark was giving her, and every sigh she let slip was one she offered back to him.

Afterward, wrapped in a soft robe and curled against Mark on the drive home, Claire laughed at how nervous she had been. Mark kissed her hair and told her he had never loved her more. Elias had left his number on a folded card, and neither of them said anything about it. They did not need to. The stag and the doe both knew the wolf would be invited back.
