Money Talks When the Landlord Knocks at Dawn

Money is tight and rent is due when her landlord knocks at dawn, and a sleepy adult woman in a towel decides to settle the bill in a very personal way.

Mara slapped the eviction notice onto the kitchen table and laughed, though there was no humor in it. Another increase, another letter from a management company that had never once fixed the leaking radiator. Theo, her roommate of two years, leaned against the counter with his arms crossed and read it over her shoulder. Rent is theft, he said quietly, and she looked up at him with a spark in her eyes that had nothing to do with anger.

They spent the evening at the table with cheap wine and a stack of paper, counting every dollar they had poured into the building. The numbers were absurd. Money that could have been trips, dinners, a life with more breathing room, all of it gone into the pocket of a man neither of them had ever met. Somewhere between the second bottle and the third spreadsheet, Theo reached over to brush a strand of hair from her face, and the room went very still.

Mara had wondered about him for months. The way he hummed while cooking, the way he always left her the last of the coffee. Now his hand lingered at her jaw, warm and steady, and she leaned into it without thinking. When he kissed her it was slow and certain, as if he had been rehearsing it for a long time and finally decided the moment was right. The papers slid to the floor and neither of them cared.

They moved to the couch, then to her room, laughing as they bumped into the hallway wall in the dark. Every touch felt like a small rebellion, something no one could charge them for, something entirely theirs. She pulled his shirt over his head and he traced the curve of her spine as if memorizing it. The radiator clanked and hissed in the corner, and for once she did not mind the noise at all.

Later, tangled in the sheets with the city lights painting the ceiling, Mara rested her head on his chest. They would organize the other tenants in the morning, she decided. They would fight the increase together. Theo kissed her forehead and murmured that the best things in this apartment had always been free, and she smiled because for the first time in a long while, she believed it.
